Rome's Two Airports: Fiumicino and Ciampino
Rome is served by two airports: Rome Fiumicino (FCO), officially named Leonardo da Vinci International Airport, and Rome Ciampino (CIA), officially named G.B. Pastine International Airport. Fiumicino is Rome's main hub, handling the vast majority of long-haul and major European flights. It is 32 km south-west of Rome city centre. Ciampino is smaller, closer to the city (15 km south-east), and primarily handles low-cost carriers including Ryanair and easyJet.
Getting from Fiumicino (FCO) to Rome City Centre
The Leonardo Express train connects Fiumicino directly to Roma Termini in 32 minutes for €14. It is a fast and reliable option for solo travellers. However, for families, travellers with luggage, or those staying in hotels that are not near Termini station, a private transfer is significantly more practical. A private taxi from FCO to Rome city centre takes approximately 40 minutes and costs from €65. Your driver will be waiting in arrivals with a name sign and will drive you directly to your hotel. Note that the official Rome taxi fixed fare from Fiumicino is €50 for inside the Aurelian Walls, but not all destinations are covered by this fixed rate — and metered taxis can be more expensive to areas outside the centre.
Getting from Ciampino (CIA) to Rome
Ciampino does not have a train connection to Rome. The options are coach shuttle (Terravision/Schiaffini, 40–50 min to Termini for €6–7) or private transfer. A private transfer from Ciampino to Rome city centre takes approximately 25 minutes and costs from €45 — making it one of the best-value airport transfers in Italy given the convenience.
Fiumicino to Naples: Long-Distance Transfer
Some travellers flying into Rome need to continue to Naples, particularly on cruise itineraries. The drive from FCO to Naples is approximately 220 km and takes around 2.5–3 hours by private transfer, priced from €280. Alternatively, the high-speed Frecciarossa train from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale takes 70 minutes — but this means first getting from Fiumicino to Termini (32 min), then booking and boarding the train. For groups or those with lots of luggage, a direct private transfer from FCO to Naples is often the most practical option.
